Drone transport at Malpensa
A new test completed under the European U-Elcome project: simulated transport of medical supplies between Cargo City and Varese Hospital
In recent days, a new drone test for medical transport between Milan Malpensa Airport and the Circolo Hospital in Varese was successfully completed. The drone took off from the hospital’s helipad, simulated the pickup of medical supplies from Malpensa’s Cargo City, flew over Lake Varese, and returned to the starting point—all within about twenty minutes.
Zero-Impact Technology
The test used long-range electric fixed-wing drones, designed for surveillance and transport operations even in densely populated areas. The goal is to optimize delivery times, reduce CO₂ emissions, and promote sustainable mobility models.
The tests were conducted within the Milan Sandbox, a regulatory and technological testing environment managed by SEA where, in coordination with ENAC, innovative solutions can be tested under controlled conditions.
A Shared Vision for the Future of Healthcare
The experimentation saw the collaboration of various institutional and operational actors: Sea Aeroporti di Milano, Comune di Varese, ASST Sette Laghi, Enac and Eurocontrol. The initiative confirms the growing interest in the use of drones in the healthcare logistics sector, where the speed and precision of deliveries can make the difference in critical situations.
