New PNRR funds for the ports of Naples and Salerno
Over €60 million for strategic infrastructure in the Central Tyrrhenian Sea
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi has announced a new package of PNRR resources for the ports of Naples and Salerno, thanks to the restructuring of funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. The intervention concerns the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority and aims to complete fundamental works for the safety, functionality, and competitiveness of the logistics system in southern Italy.
Targeted investments to boost Naples and Salerno
The new resources, amounting to €61.29 million, will be used for five main projects.
In Naples, €4 million will be allocated to completing the landfill and dredging the seabed in the Darsena di Levante (Vigliena). Another €13.12 million will finance the reinforcement of the Duca d'Aosta breakwater through consolidation works and specific interventions to increase its operational safety.
In Salerno, €13.8 million will be used for the structural and functional upgrading of piers and quays, while a further €5.67 million will be allocated to the extension of the Manfredi Pier, a key infrastructure for cruise traffic. Finally, €24.7 million will be used for the dredging and upgrading of the Ponente Pier, an intervention considered strategic for improving the commercial port's operations and making it more competitive with international standards.
A plan to strengthen the competitiveness of Italian ports
As Deputy Minister Rixi pointed out, this restructuring aims to make more effective use of European resources and accelerate the completion of priority projects. The upgrading of the ports of Naples and Salerno represents a significant step towards the construction of a more modern, competitive, and sustainable port system, capable of consolidating Italy's role in the Mediterranean.
Thanks to these new PNRR funds, the two infrastructures will be able to complete projects that are essential for commercial and cruise traffic, generating positive effects on economic growth in the South, national connectivity, and the entire transport chain.
