AI, the Engine of Logistics

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing the world of logistics, with tangible impacts on efficiency, transportation and labor

July 21, 2025

The adoption of artificial intelligence in logistics—especially in e-commerce supply chains—is delivering concrete results. According to a study by the School of Management at Politecnico di Milano, supported by Amazon, companies implementing predictive technologies have significantly improved demand forecasting: accuracy has risen by 5–10% in digitally mature companies and up to 95% in less structured ones.

Fewer trips, more sustainability

Transport operations are also benefiting from AI. Optimized load planning has increased the average vehicle fill rate from 85% to 95%, reducing total trips by 30%.

More than half of the companies involved in the study reported cutting logistical inefficiencies by 50%, and 70% have nearly eliminated urgent shipments. The outcome? Less waste, lower emissions, and improved customer service.

New professions and skills to be developed

Contrary to what one might think, the introduction of AI has not generated redundancies. On the contrary, it has prompted companies to enhance new skills and rethink roles. Eighty per cent of companies have reallocated staff to more strategic activities, while 40 per cent have already embarked on digital professional development courses.

This has led to the emergence of new figures such as data analysts, predictive planners and robotic maintenance technicians. In addition, greater integration of data along the supply chain has enabled a broader view of flows and more effective collaboration between business functions.

Suggestions for how best to tackle the situation? Companies are advised to start with pilot projects on demand and inventory, invest in digital skills and integrate sustainability metrics. Finally, employees are advised to develop their skills, especially in technology, to consolidate their position at the centre of a rapidly changing industry.
