New rail links to strengthen Italy's role in European logistics
The start of 2026 marks a significant acceleration for intermodal rail transport in the Northeast. The increase in international connections from Interporto Padova, together with new investments in capacity, technology, and sustainability, consolidates the role of the terminal as a strategic hub in logistics flows between Italy and Europe, responding to a growing demand for efficient and integrated solutions.
A strategic hub for intermodal transport
Interporto Padova strengthens its central role in European logistics corridors thanks to an expansion of international rail services and greater operational continuity at the terminal. The extension of operations to Sunday afternoons allows for better alignment with cross-border service windows, improving the reliability and regularity of flows.
New connections to Belgium and Germany
In mid-January, three new rail services operated by GTS Rail, InRail, and LTE Italia were launched, with frequencies close to daily. One of the main new developments is the connection with the Belgian port of Zeebrugge, which is set to grow to five weekly services by the second quarter of 2026. This is complemented by services to Germany, with regular connections to Duisburg and Rostock, strengthening the Northeast's access to Northern European markets.
Investments, technology, and sustainability
The development of rail services is part of a broader plan for the growth of the intermodal terminal, aimed at increasing volumes, automating operations, and reducing environmental impact. The use of hybrid locomotives, biofuels, advanced safety systems, and the upgrading of renewable energy infrastructure confirm intermodality as a key lever for more efficient and sustainable European logistics.
